The Yugoslav National Committee for Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology, as a specialized professional association within the Union of Engineers and Technicians of the Mining, Geological, and Metallurgical Professions of Yugoslavia, was established in 1963. Since 1964, the Committee has focused on organizing occasional consultations and annual assemblies. Since 1968, these assemblies have included presentations of professional and scientific papers addressing hydrogeological and engineering-geological issues relevant to the specific region of Yugoslavia hosting the annual meeting. In 1970, during one of these assemblies, the decision was made to hold the First Yugoslav Symposium on Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology in the following year. This inaugural Symposium took place from May 4 to May 8, 1971, in Herceg Novi, where 39 papers in the field of hydrogeology were presented by 43 authors. Following this event, a total of 11 additional symposia were held under this name until 1999. Due to the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the symposium changed its name twice. In 2002, it was held as the XIII Symposium on Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology with International Participation. By 2012, it adopted its current title: the Serbian Symposium on Hydrogeology with International Participation. From its inception until 2024 - which marks the year of the XVII Serbian Symposium on Hydrogeology with International Participation – over 850 authors have published their findings in the field of hydrogeology, resulting in 999 papers printed in the accompanying proceedings.
